In times of rising insurance premiums and a shortage of skilled labour, this trend is also affecting hospitals. Several clinics have closed in recent years. Nevertheless, there are hospitals that achieve an EBITDA margin of ≥ 10% or just below (e.g. Hirslanden, Limmattal, Thurgau). These examples show that it is not easy, but it is possible to run a hospital successfully. Digitalisation and innovation, a balance between savings and modernisation, basic inpatient care and specialisation, as well as a good knowledge of the Swiss healthcare system are just some of the factors that characterise successful operational management.
